Jumpstart Weekend launches the start of a new adventure. Just a few months ago you marched down the aisle to celebrate the end of high school and now you are marching into the next stage of your life.
You as future pastors, teachers, businessmen, nurses, musicians, and countless other professionals will learn how to lead in your local churches and in the world.
Meeting new friends, moving into your dorm room, attending meetings, and exploring campus during Jumpstart prepares you for the year ahead.
But you probably have a few questions as you plan to arrive on campus. Let us help you out.
Here are the top frequently asked questions and some general tips to help you succeed during your first weekend of college. Also, follow this link for new student information and a schedule of major events for Jumpstart Weekend.
What do I need to bring to the first day of school?
When you arrive for Jumpstart weekend, you should bring what you need for life on campus as well as any paperwork that you have not already submitted electronically.
Over the weekend, you should refer to your Jumpstart Welcome Packet (which you will receive when you arrive) for information about meetings and activities. You should also carry your student ID card, which you can get in the Library.
Of course, packing for college may feel like a daunting task. Here is a list to get you started: College List of Items to Bring. Please also visit here for more information on dorm furniture and decorating. You can check the Student Life Handbook for additional guidelines about dress code and dorm policies as you prepare to move into your dorm.
In general, if you think twice about bringing an item, you should probably leave it at home. Your parents could always ship it to you later. And don’t worry, we have shopping options nearby if you forget something.
Parents are invited to stay and enjoy the activities over the weekend. For one thing, they can help you unpack your room. Dorm leaders and athletes from our sports teams will also help you move boxes and get settled into the dorm.
Your parents may also attend orientation and academic unit meetings where you will meet faculty for your major to receive an overview of your program and answers to general questions.
In addition, your parents may enjoy watching the volleyball and soccer Alumni scrimmages on Saturday.
Meal tickets will be provided for you until the meal plan starts on Monday. Your parents will also receive tickets for Friday lunch and supper as well as Saturday breakfast. Additional meal tickets may be purchased.
What banks are in the area?
This list should get you started at finding a bank that will work for you: Wells Fargo, Partnership Bank, Associated Bank, BMO Harris Bank, Chase Bank, Bank of Lake Mills, Ixonia Bank, Summit Credit Union, Landmark Credit Union
How should I order textbooks? Do I need all my textbooks before coming to campus?
Renting or buying textbooks from people who have already taken the class is another great option, especially for freshman level classes. Check out Snarly’s Tradepost on Facebook for listings from the MBU family. Ask your friends and family members if they have any of the books you need.
You do not need all your books when you arrive on campus, but you should have them by the end of the first week of classes. You can always ship items to your MBU address.
Tips for Success:
Check the weather forecast. You may think you’re coming to a cooler climate, but the temperatures frequently reach the 80s and even 90s in August. Bringing a fan for your dorm room could help.
Look for announcements specific to your program. For example, music students should participate in auditions during Jumpstart Weekend. Learn more here.
Smile! Jumpstart Weekend gives you opportunities to meet other students and make new friends. Everyone is experiencing college for the first time, and a smile goes a long way in helping you relax and leave behind some of the nerves. Participate in the games and activities, both great ways to explore campus and have fun.
Overall, enjoy this new college adventure! You will make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
