Announcing the 2024 Concerto Competition Winner

Maranatha’s Music Department has announced the winners of the 2024 Concerto Competition. Adjudicated by Dr. Diana Shapiro, this year’s competition provided music students with an opportunity to develop their presentation and performance skills.

Winner

Accompanied by Charity Schmitz, Abigail Boorujy won first place with her performance of Piano Concerto No. 4 by Beethoven. Boorujy is a Music Major with concentrations in Piano Pedagogy, Piano Performance, and String Pedagogy. For winning first place, Boorujy will earn a $100 reward.

Runner-up

Accompanied by Dr. Jodi Herbert, Jonathan Lovely won second place with his performance of his original work Piano Concerto No. 1 “For the Free Man,” Mvt. II. Lovely is an Interdisciplinary Studies major with a minor in Arranging. For winning second place, Lovely will earn a $25 reward.

After the competition, Dr. Shapiro commented, “I am always amazed by the absolute devotion of these students to their music. This is so rare to be that honest in your feelings! Keep pushing yourself! The sky is the limit.”

Born in Moscow, Russia, Dr. Diana Shapiro holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Collaborative Piano from UW-Madison. Currently, she works as an Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. A member of the Varshavski-Shapiro Piano Duo, she has won international competitions and performed in venues around the globe.
