Set in 1884, Horace Vandergelder, a wealthy merchant and widower of Yonkers, New York, decides to marry again, and enlists the help of a matchmaker, Mrs. Dolly Levi.  As Dolly seeks to find the ideal wife for Mr. Vandergelder, she finds herself equally engaged in the lives of Vandergelder’s niece (Ermengarde) and her young artist friend (Ambrose), Vandergelder’s two clerks (Cornelius and Barnaby), and Vandergelder’s intended bride (Irene) and her shop assistant (Minnie).   As the action moves from Yonkers to New York City, hilarious complications arise with unexpected encounters, mistaken identities, and wild chases.  It takes a woman like Dolly to bring the situation to a satisfying conclusion for everyone – including herself.  In The Matchmaker, Thornton Wilder uses his gift for storytelling to craft a play that abounds in wild antics, charming wit, and pearls of wisdom.
