This inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp is set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938. The musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether or not to become a nun. As she enthusiastically brings music and joy to the household, Maria falls in love with the children, and eventually with their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, the Captain is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy. Since he vehemently opposes the Nazis, the Captain and Maria forge a plan for the entire family to flee Austria on foot over the Swiss Alps.
