Melissa Smith, nicknamed M’liss, is a spirited girl growing up in the frontier mining town of Smith’s Pocket. After losing her mother and being neglected by her father, M’liss develops a sharp wit, and not surprisingly, shocks the townspeople with her unconventional behavior. The kind schoolteacher, Mr. Gray, becomes her mentor, fostering her intelligence and ambition. M’liss’s journey from defiant outcast to determined young woman speaks to the transformative powers of redemption, resilience, and education. Be transported to the era of the California Gold Rush and the personalities that called the Sierra Nevada mountain range their home in this stage adaptation of American short story writer Bret Harte’s M’Liss (My Western Miss).
