Bachmann Writes New Easter Hymn

Isaac Watts’ verses remain some of the most beloved and theologically sound lyrics in existence today. Many hymns have been written using his poetry as the text, including a recent hymn by Justin Bachmann, a music arranging student at MBU. His thoughtful setting of Watts’ “Behold, What Wondrous Grace” conveys an understanding of both God’s love and His justice. Says Bachmann, “The idea came when I dwelt on the true wonder of God’s grace toward us. I love Watts’ poetry and I think that he captured this theological truth very well.”

Bachmann explains his hymn’s unique chord structure: “I tried to create a sound that was meditative and full of wonder. I hope that people will be engaged in the interesting harmonies, which will draw them to examine the meaning of the hymn.”

This hymn has personal significance to Bachmann from his reflection on the death of Christ, and it was especially meaningful for him to debut it at his arranging recital on Easter weekend. “Every time I think of the cross and the wondrous grace God has shown to me, who blasphemed His holy name with my sin, I am brought to tears.” The wonder of God’s amazing gift of grace to mankind is the message that Bachmann desires to communicate through “Behold, What Wondrous Grace.”
