S01E09 | Susan A. Marshall & Mark Herbster
April 19, 2022
Author of “How to Grow a Backbone,” founder of Backbone Institute, and “chiropractor of character,” Susan Marshall, addresses essential principles of positive leadership in this episode. She identifies elements of backbone, the inevitability of risk, and the need for commitment. She and host Dr. Matt Davis concur that nothing makes sense without faith, and they explore the core need for humility and community. They scrutinize toxicity in the workplace and conclude by stating affirmative ways one can influence the next generation.
Our next guest, Mark Herbster, who has served as Dean of the College of Bible and Church Ministries and Maranatha Baptist Seminary and Director of Student Discipleship, summarizes his mission in one word: ministry, which he defines as doing “whatever is necessary to make someone else successful.” With this agenda, Mark explains the need for humility and a focus on being an encourager. As an evangelist for 17 years, he sought to encourage pastors. As a friend, it sometimes means being a gracious confronter. In camping ministry, the focus shifts to youth and sponsors, and then at MBU it evolved into one-on-one student discipleship.
