S10E01 | Music Pedagogy, A God-Intended Identity: Janet Tschida
In Episode 1 of Season 10, On Mission’s Dr. Matt Davis sits down with one of the busiest women at MBU, Janet Tschida, associate professor of music pedagogy. Janet is a much-loved presence on campus, not only as a teacher, but also as Director of the Maranatha Music Prep School program that serves the community and students around the globe, and which employs university music majors under her supervision. She is deeply invested in training music teachers, and offers listeners a glimpse into the people and experiences that influenced her choice to become a music educator, regaling host Dr. Matt Davis with the story of her delayed music education and the setback that threatened it. She explains her mission saying, “I remember in college thinking … what does God want me to do … where … and with whom … I was missing the fundamental question … who does God want me to be.” Having established her God-intended identity, she says her mission is “to encourage those in my circle of influence to do the same,” a sphere which now includes interns and students. In a time where so many music graduates give up teaching in their first few years after leaving college, she is excited and encouraged to see the success MBU graduates of the pedagogy program have had.
Discussing benefits of music, Dr. Davis expressed appreciation for perspectives his sons gained in the music prep program, which “set the stage … to say, ‘Whatever, God, you’ve given me, that’s something I can use in ministry,’” which Dr. Davis asserts in conclusion, “is a very Maranatha thing.”
