If you are in high school and studying advanced-level repertoire, apply for our Great Lakes Scholarship Competition! Accepted applicants will receive detailed feedback on their performance and may be recognized with special honors. The winner will receive a $300 cash award, and MBU music scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,500 will be awarded to the top performers.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Age: Contestants must be advanced-level musicians in 9-12th grade.
Instruments: Piano, Voice, Strings, Brass, and Winds (only one application per person)
Level: Early Advanced to Advanced
Competition Date/Time: Friday, January 30 from 11:00-2:00 before Great Lakes Music Festival orientation (contestants arriving with their school/church will be scheduled accordingly).
Assigned Performance Times: Entrants will be notified of their assigned performance time via email on Wednesday, January 15.
Competition Performances: The competition is open to the public and competitors are strongly encouraged to listen to the other performers.
Attire: Contestants should dress professionally. Men: ties or sport coats, dress pants, and dress shoes. Women: dress pants or dresses/skirts to the top of the knee or longer and no low-cut tops.
REPERTOIRE
Number of Pieces:

- Each contestant must perform for 8-10 minutes.
- Contestants may choose to do 2 or more shorter selections or one longer selection.
Type of Repertoire:

- Repertoire must be solo classical literature. No sacred arrangements.
- Repertoire should showcase the contestant’s musicianship, understanding of stylistic eras, and technical facility.
Level: The repertoire must early-advanced to advanced.
Memorization: Memorization is required for piano, voice, and strings. Memorization is optional for brass and winds.
Accompaniment: Non-pianists must perform with an accompanist. Contestants needing an accompanist must send their music via email to music@mbu.edu by the second Tuesday of January and pay $60 (the fee covers the accompanist’s time learning the music, a 20-30 minute rehearsal before the competition, and the competition performance).
APPLICATION PROCESS
Application: Complete the competition’s online application and register for GLMF (GLMF participation is required for competitors).
Fee: Pay $20 online.
Deadline: Applications and payments must be submitted by the second Tuesday of January at the latest. Early applications are encouraged as openings are limited.
FEEDBACK AND AWARDS
Feedback: All contestants receive detailed written feedback via email within one week of the performance. You can view the evaluation form here.
Announcement of Winners: The winners will be announced and awarded their scholarships during the Great Lakes Music Festival Concert on Saturday.
Competition Awards:
1st Place: MBU Scholarship* and $300 cash award
2nd Place: MBU Scholarship*
3rd Place: MBU Scholarship*
Special Honors: Based on the judges’ ratings, contestants may also be awarded one of the following honors – Honors, High Honors, or High Honors with Distinction.
*Scholarship amounts may range from $1,000 to $3,500 and are for MBU Music Majors or Minors completing residential work. First-time winners will receive the scholarship amount their freshman year. Second-time winners will receive the second scholarship their sophomore year, etc. Scholarships are non-transferable and may not be used for MBU Online.
