No person has had a longer campus presence at Maranatha than this episode’s guest, Dr. Larry Oats. Likewise, no one has served in as many varied capacities such as teacher, dean of students, first fundraiser, student aid pioneer, interim president, and even honorary dean of women for a day. Dr. Oats’ close working relationship with the Cedarholms furnished the advantage of insider perspective when writing their biography, and he shares some of those insights as he recounts more than half a century at MBU. Throughout the account he clarifies perceptions of Dr. Cedarholm as mentor, reveals how he was plunged into teaching overnight while still a senior, explains what prompted him to select a PhD program in midlife and the challenges it presented, and candidly describes how he grappled with his wife’s cancer and emerged with hope on the other side.
