Award-Winning Guitarist Hines Performs Concert

Award-winning musician Samuel Hines recently performed a guitar concert at Maranatha Baptist University, showcasing his skill with a variety of repertoire.
His concert was split into two packages. The first package consisted of two Bach pieces, several spirituals, a couple hymns, and Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Caprichio de Goya for Guitar, Op. 195 XVIII.
The second section consisted of more romantic music. Hines performed music by Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, Frenchman Claude Debussy, and Maurice Ravel. He also played a special treat, a song composed in 1992 by Aureo Alejandro Puerta Carreño and dedicated to Hines.
Hines recently won several classical guitar competitions across the country. He won first place in the 2017 Florida Guitar Festival, an open competition involving 30 competitors, some of whom were from other countries such as Chile and Mexico. He won $1000, a return concert, masterclass, and a role as adjudicator. He also took first place in the 2017 East Carolina Professional Artist Competition, winning another $1200 and a return engagement.
In addition, Hines earned two second place finishes in the Louisville Solo Artist Guitar Competition and in the Wilson Center Guitar Competition. He also performed in a benefit concert for Puerto Rican victims, raising over $1100 donated directly to CAMA services.
Hines says, “Guitar for me is more than just music. It is also sacred. For me there is an opportunity to create a unique experience, both for myself and the audience, and draw attention to something far greater than I could be otherwise.”
Sharing his passion for performing and teaching, Samuel Hines provides lessons for MBU’s classical guitar students. Freshman Rebecca Boese reflects on why she enjoys her lessons with Hines by stating “not only do I learn more about the guitar, but I also learn so much about the intricacies and beauty of music. His passion for music inspires me.” Similarly, Averi Nicholson appreciates his approach to teaching by sharing, “he challenges me to perfect both my technique and musicianship so that I can communicate effectively.”
