Joel Montgomery Trumpet Recital Highlights
Music Major Joel Montgomery recently performed his Senior Trumpet Recital in Burckart Hall. Thanks to years of honing his skill, he dazzled the audience with his technical precision and musical expression.
After the recital, Ruth Brown commented, “Joel is to be applauded for excellent trumpet solo recital. With the wide range of repertoire selected, Joel’s performance demonstrated his command of his trumpet both musically and technically.”
Montgomery gave his recital to fulfill the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music with concentrations in Trumpet Performance and Arranging. Following graduation, he will pursue a Masters of Organizational Leadership at Maranatha.
Rondo for Lifey
Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)
Accompanied by Dr. Jodi Herbert on the piano, Montgomery begins his recital with a short yet memorable piece by Bernstein. Dedicated to Bernstein’s dog, this Rondo features odd accents, shifting meters, and constant motion.
Trumpet Concerto
Alexander Arutiunian (1920-2012)
At a length of 15 minutes, Montgomery’s next piece is the longest in the program. Despite the oppressive Soviet leadership in Armenia during the 20th century, Arutiunian published much music, and this piece was one of his most successful and well-known compositions.
Song for Japan
Steven Verhelst, arr. Seiichi Sato
In 2011, Verhelst wrote this piece after a devastating 9.0 earthquake in Japan. Montgomery performs this piece alongside Hope Ostrander on the piano and Dr. David Brown on the trombone.
