Students will read and analyze short fiction by such authors as Rudyard Kipling, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, G.K. Chesterton, Arthur Conan Doyle, Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf, J.R.R. Tolkien, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Henry James, Mark Twain, William Dean Howells, Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Katherine Anne Porter, John Updike, Alice Walker, and Amy Tan. The project will include a final research project. (3 cr.)
