Two alumni awards are given to alumni regularly recognizing those who have served with distinction in ministry and those who have shown character and outstanding ability on the athletic field.
This year we had the honor of adding Dr. Richard Akins to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
While attending Maranatha, Rich was a member of the football team from 1972-1975, and was active on-campus as a class officer. In 1974 Rich married the love of his life, Mikki, whom he met in a shrewd restaurant business hire prior to attending Maranatha. After graduating in 1977, Rich was active in Christian education at Maranatha Baptist Bible College as Athletic Director (6 years) and at Maranatha Baptist Academy as a teacher (15+ years), administrator (6 years) and as football coach (30 years) where his teams tied or won 10 Indian Trails Conference Championships.
In 1994, Rich began his ministry at Calvary Baptist Church in Jefferson, Wisconsin as Pastor where he continues to serve today. Through the years, Rich has demonstrated a great love for young people as a pastor, teacher, coach and administrator, and a great love for Maranatha and the opportunities that he has been afforded by relationships and mentoring by men such at Dr. B. Myron Cedarholm and Dr. Richard Weeks; the friendships of faculty and staff through the years; and the opportunity to reinvest in the lives of countless young people.
